Sandbag Solutions

If you obtained sandbags for the storms this winter and are not sure what to do with them now, our first tip is to keep them. Store them in your basement, garage, side yard throughout the rest of the rain season. If you’re looking to know what to do with sandbags once the rainy season is over, you can add clean sand to soil in flower beds or as a base for paver, general fill on your property, or add the sand to rock gardens or paver pathways to fill empty areas to prevent weeds from growing. Note that sandbags that have been in contact with flood water cannot be reused as they could be contaminated. The City will begin collection of used sandbags at each of the four sandbag stations on Tuesday, February 14. Sandbag locations are:
- Palo Alto Avenue at Chaucer Street
- Rinconada Tennis Courts (at the corner of Newell Road and Hopkins Avenue)
- Mitchell Park (600 East Meadow Drive)
- Palo Alto Airport Terminal (1925 Embarcadero Road)
Residents may also dispose of one or two sandbags each week in your black garbage container or through scheduled Clean Up Days in coordination with GreenWaste of Palo Alto. Call (650) 493-4894 to obtain your Clean Up Day schedule.
