Electric Vehicles
Palo Alto ranks as one of the top cities in the nation to embrace electric vehicles (EVs): as of 2023, EVs account for more than half of new car sales in Palo Alto. Join your neighbors and power your drive with the City's carbon neutral electricity.
Installing EV chargers is easier than ever with the City's rebate program for residents, multi-family residence owners, and non-profits. For multi-family residences, schools, and non-profits, the program also includes personalized technical assistance, free of charge.
Did you know the City is reducing emissions from our work by electrifying our fleet? There are now 35 electric vehicles (EVs) in the City fleet.
EVs and the S/CAP
The Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (S/CAP) guides Palo Alto's sustainability and emissions reduction strategy. In the S/CAP, the EV and Mobility areas address emissions from transportation. Transportation emissions are a function of two factors, the carbon intensity of fuels, addressed here, and Vehicle Miles Travelled (VMT), addressed in the Mobility section of the S/CAP. In order to reach Palo Alto's 2030 emissions reduction targets, we must implement strategies to reduce the carbon intensity of fuels, most promisingly encouraging the switch to EVs. The EV goals in the S/CAP focus on increasing the adoption of EVs and the development of a robust charging network.
Goals
- Reduce transportation related GHG emissions at least 65% below 1990 levels
- Develop a public and private charging network to support EV adoption
