What can close looking and iconography, the study of signs and symbols, reveal about historical and cultural contexts in political portraiture?
Art historian, multimedia artist, and Cubberley Artist-in-Residence Cynthia Brannvall will explore the possibilities and limits of art historical methods through two political artworks: Edward Savage’s The Washington Family and Guillaume Guillon-Lethière’s Oath of the Ancestors. Through close analysis, the talk will demonstrate that there is always more than meets the eye when looking at art.
The City of Palo Alto's Cubberley Artist Studio Program (CASP) is a unique rent-subsidized program with 22 artist studios for long-term residencies and Rotating Artist Studios for short-term rentals. Long-term rent-subsidized studios with CASP are provided in exchange for community service where the artists offer free public programming. CASP is more than studio space - it’s a place to create, connect, and engage with the public.
