The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures this week with Palo Alto expected to reach the mid 90s. Plus, low humidity, breezy conditions, and very little overnight temperature recovery increases wildfire risk. Stay safe and cool with these tips.

Staying Safe and Cool When it's Hot Out

  • In extreme heat, dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Check on your pets frequently to ensure they are safe during extreme heat and provide them with plenty of water.
  • Keep strenuous activity to a minimum during the hottest parts of the day (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.).
  • Make sure you drink LOTS of water to stay hydrated and prevent dehydration, heat stroke & more.
  • During extreme heat drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Eat small meals and eat more often. Eat light, cool, easy-to-digest foods such as fruit or salads.
  • Use a buddy system when working or exercising in excessive heat.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.
  • Minimize direct exposure to the sun. Sunburn reduces your body's ability to dissipate heat.
  • Take a cool bath or shower.
  • Keep the window coverings closed during the day to block the sun's heat.
