Palo Alto Joins Cities Race to Zero
Published on October 22, 2021
Sustainability and climate action are long-standing priorities for the City of Palo Alto. We set an aggressive goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by the year 2030, which represents our fair share of the global 50% emissions reduction needed.
The City of Palo Alto is proud to be a part of
Cities Race to Zero - a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, and investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.
By joining Cities Race to Zero, Palo Alto pledges the following:
- We recognize the global climate emergency and the City’s role in actively fighting climate change
- We are committed to keeping global heating below the 1.5° Celsius goal of the Paris Agreement
- We are committed to putting inclusive climate action at the center of all urban decision-making to create thriving and equitable communities for everyone
- We are committed to reaching (net)-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the 2040s or sooner, in line with global efforts to limit warming to 1.5° Celsius
We recognize the global climate emergency and are proud to be a part of the solution by thinking globally and acting locally. By joining a like-minded civic and business community, we can help build momentum around the shift to a decarbonized economy and deliver an equitable and just future for our communities and our residents.
