Thanks to all community members who braved the rain to attend the Storm Preparedness Workshop on November 15.

The workshop offered the ins and outs of being prepared for the winter rain season with expected El Niño Conditions. The Climate Prediction Center, National Weather Service, and National Centers for Environmental Prediction are forecasting a wet and windy winter likely to continue through March. The workshop kicked off with a 10-minute presentation about last winter’s storms and how the City is using lessons learned to prepare this year. Breakout stations on specific topics offered one-on-one opportunities to get questions answered by staff from different departments.

Here is a quick guide on the stations and where to find more details:

  • Staff are advancing Capital Improvement Projects to minimize flood risk and mitigate potential storm damage. Learn more at www.paloalto.gov/CityStormPrep.
  • Only a third of Palo Alto residents are signed up for emergency alerts. Sign up here. Follow the Palo Alto Police Department on Nixle here.
  • Gain details on community related storm impacts and other updates by bookmarking www.paloalto.gov/stormupdate and by following the City on social media at www.paloalto.gov/Connect.
  • Help neighbors be prepared by volunteering with YCS to fill sandbags or letting YCS know if you need help to prepare your home for rain, email them at ycs@youthcommunityservice.org.
  • To monitor creek levels during a storm, and gain forecasting tools to track weather impacts, visit www.paloalto.gov/CreekMonitor
  • Community impacts last year included 243 limb failures/pickups and 563 tons of green debris removal. For Frequently Asked Questions about trees, go here. Urban Forestry staff loves trees. To learn more about their work, go to www.paloalto.gov/Trees.
  • Your home preparedness is a key aspect of storm prep including filling and using sandbags, weather-proofing your home, and ensuring gutters and storm drains are kept clear. Visit www.paloalto.gov/Storms for storm ready resources.

Read a two-part community series on ways to be storm ready and the City’s focus on storm preparedness.
