Work begins Tuesday, February 17, 2026

PALO ALTO, CA — The City of Palo Alto and the Palo Alto Fire Department, in partnership with the Los Altos Hills County Fire District and the Santa Clara County Fire Safe Council, are providing notice of upcoming vegetation management work at the Page Mill Road and Interstate 280 interchange. This 5.85 mile project area work is being implemented in collaboration with Caltrans, the Santa Clara County Fire Department, the Town of Los Altos Hills, and other regional partners.

The goals of this project are to reduce wildfire risk and lessen impact from severe weather events by trimming woody vegetation, prune trees, clear dead material, and remove roadside trash. Work will improve visibility and travel safety, reduce the likelihood of roadside ignitions from vehicles or other sources, and help keep interchange ramps and adjacent corridors accessible during a wildfire, evacuation, or other emergency. Hazardous vegetation removal along the roadside will also support safer ingress and egress for first responders and the public in the event of a disaster.

The project will treat the Page Mill Road / Interstate 280 interchange, which consists of four outer ramps and two inner loop ramps. Treatment areas are divided by jurisdiction between the Los Altos Hills County Fire District and the City of Palo Alto.

City of Palo Alto Jurisdiction (approximately 16 acres)
These portions of the project will treat both sides of the following:
• The northbound I280 to Page Mill Road ramp, including the left turn lane to southbound Page Mill Road (approximately 0.4 linear miles)
• The northbound Page Mill Road to northbound I280 inner loop ramp (approximately 0.2 linear miles)
• The northbound Page Mill Road to southbound I280 ramp (approximately 0.2 linear miles)
• The onramp to southbound I280 from the inner loop ramp (approximately 0.3 linear miles)
• Part of the ramp onto Arastradero Road from northbound Page Mill Road and from the southbound I280 offramp (approximately 0.1 linear miles)
• The eastern side of most of northbound Page Mill Road (approximately 0.3 linear miles)

Los Altos Hills County Fire District Jurisdiction (approximately 19 acres)
These portions of the project will treat both sides of the following:
• The southbound Page Mill Road to northbound I280 ramp (approximately 0.3 linear miles)
• The southbound I280 to Page Mill Road ramp, including the left turn lane to northbound Page Mill Road (approximately 0.5 linear miles)
• The onramp to northbound I280 from the inner loop ramp (approximately 0.2 linear miles)
• The southbound Page Mill Road to southbound I280 inner loop ramp (approximately 0.2 linear miles)
• The western side and center median of southbound Page Mill Road (approximately 0.3 linear miles)
• The southern ends of northbound Page Mill Road and part of the ramp onto Arastradero Road from northbound Page Mill Road (approximately 0.1 linear miles)
• The southern side of the eastern end of the northbound Page Mill Road to southbound I280 ramp (approximately 0.1 linear miles)

Traffic Advisory

Traffic control will be in place for the duration of the Page Mill Road / Interstate 280 Interchange Project. There will be intermittent lane or ramp closures during the project. For short periods of time within the working hours of 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., some ramps will be inaccessible. Changeable message signs will be in the area starting two weeks before the work notifying residents of upcoming closures.

The project is scheduled for February 17, 2026 through February 26, 2026. Work on the interchange will occur Mondays through Fridays, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Work on frontage areas may occur between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. All work is dependent on weather conditions and holidays.

Motorists should expect delays, allow extra time for travel, and use alternate routes when possible. Please exercise caution when passing through the work zone. Residents and pedestrians must stay outside the designated “cone zone” at all times to ensure the safety of everyone—residents, crews, and property.
