June 10, 2021 Update

As part of the Highway 101 Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge project, the City’s contractor has rescheduled installation of the prefabricated bridge section over the freeway on June 12 and 13. Partial lane closure of US-101 will begin on Saturday, June 12 from 8 p.m. and the freeway will be fully closed in northbound and southbound directions between San Antonio Road and Embarcadero Road on Sunday, June 13 from 1:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Limited lanes will be re-opened in both northbound and southbound US-101 on Sunday, June 13 from 6:00 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. and all lanes will be opened by 11:00 a.m. The freeway closure will not require any closure of City’s roads or streets.

The following detour will be in effect during the full freeway closure:

Northbound US-101 Detour

  • Exit at San Antonio Road
  • Make a right onto San Antonio
  • At the signal make a left onto East Bayshore Road and continue towards Embarcadero Road
  • Make a left at Embarcadero and then right into the NB 101 on-ramp

Southbound US-101 Detour

  • Exit at Embarcadero / Oregon Expressway
  • Stick left and continue on the Oregon Expressway off ramp and then onto Oregon Expressway
  • Make a left at the first signal to West Bayshore Road
  • Continue onto West Bayshore Road which becomes Fabian Way all the way to East Charleston Road
  • Make a left onto East Charleston Road and continue straight (crossing San Antonio Road) to the SB 101 on-ramp

Project Background

The bridge segments across East and West Bayshore Roads were installed in the end of April. This middle segment will connect the two side segments.

Environmental assessment and project design were completed in late 2017 and early 2019, respectively. Caltrans approved the right-of-way certification, encroachment permit, and Authorization to Proceed in 2019. On November 18, 2019, Council approved the construction contract for the project. Construction began in late January 2020 and is anticipated to be completed by summer 2021.

Previous Updates

June 4, 2021 Update

The planned installation of the final Highway 101 Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge section over Highway 101 this weekend on June 5 and 6 has been postponed again due to transport issues. The bridge section has travelled from Arizona and is currently about 100 miles away from the jobsite. However, the hauling company transporting the bridge is having difficulties maneuvering the oversize load through their selected route and through constrained areas. They estimate it will take several more days to reach Palo Alto. The City will provide an update as soon as the contractor reschedules the installation.

June 3, 2021 Update

As part of the Highway 101 Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge project, the City’s contractor has rescheduled installation of the prefabricated bridge section over the freeway on June 5 and 6. Partial lane closure of US-101 will begin on Saturday, June 5 from 8 p.m. and the freeway will be fully closed in northbound and southbound directions between San Antonio Road and Embarcadero Road on Sunday, June 6 from 1:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Limited lanes will be re-opened in both northbound and southbound US-101 on Sunday, June 6 from 6:00 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. and all lanes will be opened by 11:00 a.m. The freeway closure will not require any closure of City’s roads or streets.

May 25, 2021 Update

The bridge installation over Highway 101 slated for this weekend on May 29 into the morning of May 30, has been postponed. Although the contractor had obtained the proper permits for transporting the bridge section through Nevada, the Nevada Highway Patrol was unable to provide the escort needed to transport the bridge from the Arizona/Nevada border to the Nevada/California border in time for this weekend’s installation. Staff is currently projecting the arrival of the bridge section at the job site next week. The contractor and project team has tentatively rescheduled the installation of bridge to the evening of June 5 through the morning of June 6, pending availability of Nevada and California Highway Patrols to meet this schedule.
