Over several years, my artistic research and creative practice have been focused on the current model of food production, distribution and consumption and its repercussions on sustainability and the natural environment, with supermarket food and meat trays as my primary source of inspiration. Paradoxically, supermarkets might be one of the few remaining places for animal observation today, while state-of-the-art vacuum sealing techniques allow us to keep a safe distance from the creatures. After a lifetime of routine confinement – whether in pens, crates, or cages – disposable food trays become the final enclosure to accommodate and display beef, pork, and poultry, once processed and ready to hit the shelves. To some extent, these sealed containers become a reflection of the sheds that dominate farming today and the aesthetics of modern agricultural landscape. – Stefanie Herr

Stefanie Herr is a visual artist based in Barcelona, Spain. She studied Architecture at Technische Universität Berlin, and initially worked as an architect and passionate model maker until she decided to change career paths in 2007. Now Herr’s experimental practice oscillates between the domains of photography and sculpture. Drawing inspiration from the USGS National Geologic Map Database, charts and graphs, her cardboard constructions are generally accurate topographic representations of the underlying data.

Herr’s work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows both at home and abroad. Herr was shortlisted for the 2017 ArtFAD Contemporary Art and Craft Awards and the 2015 Fundació Vila Casas Sculpture Award, amongst others, and is currently preparing for solo exhibitions at La Plataforma and Fundació Palo Alto in Barcelona.
