The Fire Prevention Bureau is housed in the Development Center, and ensures compliance with the fire code for the safety of occupants and protection of property. Fire Inspectors perform fire sprinkler and fire alarm plan checks, permitting and field inspections to ensure all construction complies with local and national codes. Please send all inquiries relating to fire permits to firepermits@paloalto.gov.
A Fire Permit is required for:
- Fire alarms/sprinklers
- Any on-site construction activity that emits or produces heat or flames
Please follow the steps below to submit a Fire Permit application.
As of January 1, 2026, all Fire and HazMat Permit Applications submitted will be assessed for their associated permit fee(s) and will need to be paid prior to the review process. The Development Center will be closed from December 24, 2025 to January 4, 2026, in observance of the winter holidays.
A new 2025 California Building and Fire Code cycle will come into effect on January 1, 2026. Building and Fire Applications for the current 2022 Building Code and Fire cycle will be accepted up until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025. Please note that applications submitted in December may be delayed due to an anticipated increase in applications. Our Online Permitting System will reopen on Monday, January 5 at 8 a.m. Thank you for your patience and we wish you a safe Holiday Season.
