As a renter, there are many ways you can implement home upgrades that don’t require permanent changes to your home that can have lasting community benefits.

  • NEW! Explore induction cooking by borrowing a portable induction cooktop from the Palo Alto Library, or by purchasing a low-cost countertop unit.
  • Try electric countertop appliances like electric kettles, crockpots, or toaster ovens.
  • Use smart plugs or power strips help reduce energy use from electronics when they’re not in use.
  • Switch to LED lightbulbs. They use less energy and last longer.
  • Seal gaps around doors and windows with foam weatherstripping to help keep your home comfortable year-round.
  • Use ceiling, desk, or stand-alone fans to circulate air and improve comfort in the spaces where you spend the most time.
  • Line-dry your laundry instead of using a clothes dryer, this option offers the benefit of having clothes last longer too.
  • Adjust your thermostat settings. Set your thermostat to 68°F or lower in the winter and 78 or higher in the summer to reduce energy use.

These small upgrades can make a meaningful difference in energy use, to your home, and the planet!
