As a renter, there are many ways you can implement home upgrades that don’t require permanent changes to your home that can have lasting community benefits.

  • Renters with a City of Palo Alto Utilities account are eligible for a portable induction cooktop rebate. Visit the City's Rebate Hub to learn more and apply.
  • Explore induction cooking by borrowing a portable induction cooktop from the Palo Alto Library or by purchasing a low-cost countertop unit.
  • Try electric countertop appliances like electric kettles, crockpots, or toaster ovens.
  • Use smart plugs or power strips to help reduce energy use from electronics when they’re not in use.
  • Switch to LED lightbulbs. They use less energy and last longer.
  • Seal gaps around doors and windows with foam weatherstripping to help keep your home comfortable year-round.
  • Use ceiling, desk, or stand-alone fans to circulate air and improve comfort in the spaces where you spend the most time.
  • Line-dry your laundry instead of using a clothes dryer; this option offers the benefit of having clothes last longer too.
  • Adjust your thermostat settings. Set your thermostat to 68°F or lower in the winter and 78 or higher in the summer to reduce energy use.

These small upgrades can make a meaningful difference in energy use in your home and on the planet!

Find support from the City to upgrade your home at no cost if you're enrolled in the Residential Energy Assistance Program.
