Project Description

Following a no-cost electrification assessment and report, the customer learned about available electrification opportunities and rebates. They then hired a licensed contractor, obtained the necessary City permits, and successfully installed heat pump HVAC units in a timely manner. By doing so, the customer not only received an electrification rebate but also significantly reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by replacing their old fossil-fuel-powered HVAC system.

Program Used

The Business Electrification Technical Assistance Program (BETAP) assists non-residential City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU) customers with conversion of gas equipment to efficient electric alternatives at their offices or facilities.

Program Benefits

  • Energy efficiency and cost savings: Heat pumps are more energy-efficient and can be cheaper to operate than gas furnaces.
  • Reduced fossil fuel dependence: Heat pumps run on CPAU’s clean electricity and not gas, which would produce carbon emissions.
  • Improved safety and comfort: Heat pumps operate more quietly than gas furnaces and pose a lower risk of fire and carbon monoxide leaks.

Project Takeaways

  • Partnering with a contractor experienced in Palo Alto permitting and proper installation was key to successful project completion.
  • Choosing a heat pump with high energy efficiency ratings (SEER or IEER) maximizes energy savings.
  • Understanding initial costs and available incentives helped prepare for the higher upfront investment, with long-term returns through energy savings.

Testimonial

"We have started on our journey to electrify our church campus with the first phase of heat pump installations. We are looking forward to a fully integrated system of heat pumps for heating & cooling in the near future. And we are grateful for the assistance from the Palo Alto team.” - First Presbyterian Church
