Community Indigo Dye Extravaganza
Textile artist Jaya Griscom led a series of hands-on indigo dye workshops at Cubberley Community Center, inviting participants of all ages to sew, fold, clamp, stitch, and dye bandanas, bags, and flags using a shared community indigo vat.
Indigo is a historic natural dye that transforms from green to vivid blue through oxidation, creating a uniquely engaging and accessible dyeing experience. Across the workshop series, community members explored traditional and experimental resist techniques while contributing to a shared creative process.
The workshop series has now concluded. Inspired by the community’s participation and shared creativity, Griscom created three large indigo banners that bring together the spirit of the workshop series. The completed banners are installed at Cubberley (between the E- and F-wing) and will remain on view through August 2026.
