Entwined by Charles Gadeken features three illuminated sculptural forms installed on California Avenue in Palo Alto. Constructed from powder-coated steel and programmable LEDs, these branching “shrubs” transform from whimsical daytime structures into softly glowing, animated forms after dark.
Inspired by the forms of trees and the rhythms of the natural world, the sculptures display ever-changing light sequences that evoke wind, rain, rippling water, and other natural phenomena. Their shifting colors and movement invite repeat visits, offering a different experience throughout the evening.
More than a light installation, Entwined is designed as a place to gather. The sculptures encourage people to slow down, linger, and experience public space together, turning an everyday streetscape into an inviting environment for curiosity, conversation, and shared discovery.
On display through September, 2026.
